Course Description


The purpose of this presentation is to provide education on how to screen for alcohol use disorder properly and effectively as a primary care provider. This will include the establishment of rapport, identifying co-morbidities and risk factors, and the proper use of screening tools such as the CAGE questionnaire, T-ACE, AUDIT, and AUDIT-C. Additionally, we will cover appropriate screenings for red flags such as withdrawal, seizures, delirium tremens, and proper care coordination. Other topics in this presentation will include common nutrient deficiencies, medical and psychiatric co-morbidities, patient education, prognostic factors, and practitioner limitations. We will also review how to properly record and assess the number of drinks per week and key points in documentation with appropriate coding.

About the Instructor


Andrew Dzikowski (he/him) is a naturopathic physician specializing in addiction medicine and psychiatry at Sundew Integrated Recovery. He received his Doctorate of Naturopathic Medicine and Master of Science in Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine from Bastyr University in 2021 and is licensed in the state of Washington. Prior to this, Andrew received his Bachelor of Science in Nursing from the University of Hawaii at Manoa and completed a 1-year nursing residency at Swedish Medical Center in Addiction Medicine and Withdrawal Management. Thereafter, he worked as a withdrawal management nurse for 4+ years at Evergreen Recovery Centers Detox, then transitioned into a provider role soon after. In addition, he has completed an internship at the Betty Hazelden Ford Foundation, completed advanced course work in addiction medicine including the Buprenorphine Waiver training, training in the Ashton Method of Benzodiazepine Tapering, and the ASAM Alcohol Withdrawal Management Series as a member of the American Society of Addiction Medicine.
