The Course

The interaction of pharmaceuticals and herbs is often overlooked in many clinical settings. Understanding the basics of herb-drug interactions for commonly prescribed supplements and integrative medicines is important to help keep patients safe, particularly pediatric patients. This talk will explore common integrative therapeutics that can be prescribed by self-prescription, allied health professionals, or NDs alike and review current research on drug-herb interactions and information on safety monitoring.

Learning Objectives:

1.) Updated numbers for the use of integrative medicine in pediatric patient population - healthy and medically complex children

2.) Information regarding comfort of providers asking about integrative medicine treatments and knowledge about interactions

3.) Discuss top 3-5 most commonly used/prescribed integrative medicine treatments in the management of pediatric patients (ex: Senna, probiotics, melatonin, B1, CoQ10, etc)

4.) Discuss the pharmaceutical interactions of these integrative medicine treatments for medically complex pediatric patients
